I wanted to make this post for a while, but now i feel like the time is right since he his retired?.. Maybe? Anyways he is one of my favorite directors and he is very consistent with his film quality. He basically forged a movie empire. I finally saw his final film, so i'm making this list of his movies in order of rank. Feel free to post your own.
**There are two movies of him i haven't seen yet, Kiki's Delivery Service and Proco Rosso.
8. The Wind Rises (2013)
Honestly, this movie disappointed me. It starts off pretty darn good too. Some guy with a clear cut goal. You really root for this guy and see him go through a very dark period in human history then suddenly a really annoying love story is thrown in. This movie broke two rules Myazaki films always seem to have, first its not a fantasy movie and 2nd there are no particularly strong female characters. People everywhere were praising this movie and making paralels with Myazaki's own career, i was waiting to see someone say, it was only average, which it was IMO. There were moments in the movie that felt like a fantasy story, which really just made me wish i was watching another of his movies.
- The Wind Rises:
Man Jiro's wife is so annoying and she diverts the whole story from this guy's triumphant success to a random love story.
7/10
7. Ponyo (2008)
I really don't have much to say about this movie. It has good animation and a descent story. I really wish i had more to say lol, i guess it's nothing overly special by Myazaki standards.
7.5/10
6. Laputa: Castle in the Sky. (1986)
This was a pretty descent movie. The tone was really good and pacing was nice too. It didn't overuse the fantastical elements and the animation was incredible, especially for its time. The characters were kind of bland though, except the grandma. I put it this low on my list, because it didn't really WOW me. It was great and it immersed me into its world, but i was never blown away.
7.7/10
5. My Neighbor Totoro (1988)
If i had to describe this movie in one word, id say its cute. The movie once again has really good pacing and does not overuse the fantastical elements. I like how the kids act like kids, stubborn, vulnerable and obviously immature, but they are still likable. There are many very memorable scenes in this and even though we don't see much of the funny furry creatures, i was never bored
8/10
4. Spirited Away (2001)
This one is often considered to be one of his best movies. I absolutely liked it and most people i ask tell me it's their favorite Myazaki movie. Its not mine, but i still find it very good. I think the reason most people like this one more than me it because they saw it at a very young age, which brings in bonus nostalgia points, and i have to admit, those bonus nostalgia points affect my decision for my number one favorite Myazaki movie.
This is clearly one of the most immerse movies he's made. You get transported into a whole new world, with different rules and different people, he its done so well. There are a ton of crazy imaginative moments that you well never see elsewhere in your life. I loved it.
8.5/10
3. Howl's Moving Castle (2004)
Man i'm running out of compliments to say about his movies. This movie id say is the one with the most stuff going on. Its based on a book, so that makes sens. I remember watching the trailer and thinking it would be garbage, but damn was it amazing. The visuals are as spectacular as ever. I think the setting is really cool, its like the same time period as full metal alchemist, but with more fantasy elements and crazy cool looking airships.
9/10
2. Nausicaa of the Valley of Wing (1979)
This move was AWESOME. The world is crazy cool the characters are interesting, the concept is totally original. Even the fights are cool. It's all done with spectacular animation and even though the movie is pretty long, you jsut wish you had another hour. This movie launched his career and its easy to see why. Its unfortunate this guy never makes sequels, because a sequel of this would be amazing, especially since he already wrote a sequel for this.
9.5/10
1. Princess Mononoke (1997)
I was debating which movie to put on the top of this list, and this one beat Nausicaa probably because of the nostalgia points. Anyways, this movie is perfect. One of my favorite all time movies. I love this world, with the war and the people and no clear bad guy. I like the lore and i really can't praise it enough. Iv'e seen it 100x and i'll prob see it 100x more.
10/10
Damn i ran out of compliments half way through this post.
I mentioned Myazaki rules in the Wind Rises review. It's just a list of stuff i made up that usually comes up in his movies like an environmental message, anti-war, a protagonist who is an outsider to the whole situation, fantasy, strong female character and there are a few more, i can't remember because someone is smoking weed next to me.
