Subject: Fate Series (Fate/Zero & Fate/Stay Night) Fri Oct 24, 2014 3:58 pm
The basic premise of the fate series is a tag team battle royal involving duos of mages and legendary historical/fictional heroes fighting for the grail.
Fate Zero: Fate Zero is a really well made anime with a bunch of well rounded characters. I usually don't notice animation unless it is incredible or very bad, so i can say this show has incredible animation. The best part is almost all the characters have real motivations for wanting to win the contest making the line blurry as to who is actually going to win. Also there is no cheesy love story and IT DOES NOT TAKE PLACE IN HIGH SCHOOL! There is zero ecchi and characters don't get power boosts at any time during the series. From the moment it starts, it is clear who is stronger than who, but head on battle is not the only way to win. The down side is the beginning is dialog heavy and low action. I think overall this anime is incredibly mature and well worth a watch Overall 8.5/10
Fate Stay Night: Unlimited Blade works This version of fate stay night is a continuation of fate zero that was made by the same folks. Once again the animation is incredible and the beginning is dialog heavy. So far it seems like it could be as good as Fate Zero, but it does take place in high school, which i really don't care for and they are hinting at a love story, which i hope does not happen. At the moment of this review it is only 3 episodes in and i can say it is very good. It has movie level animation and , from what can be seen, well rounded characters.

So let's discuss Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade works episodes 0-3 Non spoiler Zone Its clear from the beginning that this series is not as adult as Fate/Zero. You can tell simply by the fact that they are high school students. The pacing and tone are still very good and i like how they go get into slow, it just makes the action scenes cooler once they come around. Episode 0-1 fit together very well.
Spoiler Zone Eps 0-3
Spoiler:
So, i'm kinda of getting scared as to where this series is going. It feels like its built to be stand alone, and as such, the characters seems very detached from their fate/zero selves. This doesn't seem like the Saber who got her spirit crushed in Zero and Sakura (The purple haired chicked) doesn't seem like someone who has gone through an incredibly rough childhood (ie, being raped by insects), she just became your average shy anime girl. Other than that its still pretty good. I just have one more gripe, with the entire series this time, why don't the noble spirits just murder the masters. There was a time during episode 3 where archer could have just insta killed eliasveil, but he didnt and no one seemed to even bring it up

Episode 5:
I feel like the series has been declining in quality since the awesome episode 0 and episode 1. But this episode fells like something is progressing as opposed to. The whole Rin and Shirou, let's be enemies, no let's work together, no let's be enemies thing... We see what looks like assassin here, but there is also some samurai guy in the intro, so i'm not sure, because he seemed like assassin, also this chick was flying in the intro, made me think she was caster or maybe rider, i guess we will see. Fucking intro ruins everything, i should have kept skipping it lol

Ive been meaning to watch this series for several months now, and now that i have heres my thoughts on it
Fate/stay night (2006):
The first half of this series is very very average, it has terrible animation and terrible action, it feels like all the characters arent really trying and are purposely performing poorly to give the main character a chance Had bacon not said fate/zero was good (like if i had watched this on my own months ago) Â i wouldve just dropped it and never looked back but i continued forward with it because bacon was right about clannad so i trusted him on this The 2nd half is a mess of plot threads that come from no where and vanish with little to no conclusion, it was so confusing that i had to make sure fate/zero wasnt actually made before fate/stay night because it felt like i was just missing something, but no fate/zero didnt exist when this came out so i knew as much as the makers intended the audience to know I actually rewatched an episode because i thought maybe i just wasnt focusing but no, it really is that bad
This definitely should not be watched, by anyone, ever, even if you are like me and have the need to see everything that a series has its not worth it, especially with the new series thats currently airing, although there is 1 good thing that came from this series now that im watching the new series which ill talk about in the new 2014 series section
Fate/stay night movie (2010): The movie is much better than the show, characters feel like they are actually trying, the action is good, the story is better, it fills in a lot of those plot threads Its not great, but its not bad
The main problem with it is the pacing, its so rushed, it only had about 2 hours to fit in so much stuff that its ridiculously fast paced, you need to have seen the 2006 series to be able to keep up with it and even then its still too fast
Fate/Zero (2011):
My god, this is incredible, its so good in fact that i will need to revise my top 10 anime list to put this at number 3 Unlike clannad where i said it didnt make the list because it wasnt consistently good since the first season really drags it down, fate/zero isnt dragged down by fate/stay night since you can watch it without seeing anything else in the series other than fate/zero and its a fantastic experience all the way through The characters are great, the story is good, the action is epic, and the animation is some of the best ive seen
None of the characters feel like side characters, many of them feel like main characters, yet it doesnt suffer from the usual issues that happen when there actually are multiple main characters, they all have detailed back stories and desires/motivations, they feel real
The story starts off as pretty basic but doesnt go the way youd expect something like this to go, even though i knew the general outcome of it because i had seen fate/stay night, i was still surprised by the ending
Spoiler:
Fate/stay night gave the impression that kiritsugu and saber won, completely, and kiri chose to destroy it instead of making a wish for reasons that werent known in stay night, so i was extra surprised
The action might be the most epic of any anime, there are very few that i can think of that are this epic, the abilities that the characters use are ridiculously powerful yet they are still all about equal to eachother, bacon said its clear who is stronger than who but id, they are all pretty equal in terms of strength its just that some are better at certain things than others
I recommend everyone watch it
Fate/stay night (2014):
This is significantly better than the 2006 series, the same animation studio that made fate/zero are adapting stay night, they have made many minor changes, these minor changes are starting to add up to major changes, it feels like they are re-writting the source material a bit to better fit with fate/zero I said 1 good thing came out of watching the 2006 series, and that is seeing what was changed in the 2014 series, i love looking for tiny details like that and there are dozens throughout this (and ive only seen the first 2 episodes) Every change has made it better so far, much better, its amazing how a few small dialog changes make everything way better The 1 major change that is major on its own is
Spoiler:
Sakura She meets with gilgamesh several times, which never happened in the 2006 series The bruise on her hand also looks like a faint command seal which also never happened (she never had a bruise and it was never implied that shinji hurt her in the 2006 series either) So im really interested in seeing where that goes, bacon said she doesnt seem like the same character from fate/zero, but i feel like she is She seems like just a normal shy girl, but theres definitely something up with her here I mean at the end of fate/zero she seemed relatively normal when interacting with kariya so i can believe she can act normal despite what shes been through, especially now that shes older
Since these changes exist and since its the same studio that adapted fate/zero im willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and have faith that it will be good, though probably not as good as fate/zero, but fate/zero is exceptional so i wouldnt expect it to be that good anyway

I told you not to watch dis.

I almost wanted to watch this, just to see how gilgamesh is involved in this series, but even though i searched, i couldn't find a single person or review that said it was good. So i decided against it.

I feel like the ending was a little dragged down by fate/stay night, but not in any major way.
Spoiler:
The conclusion lacked a certain closure, because you don't get to see what happens to Gilgamesh, Kirei and Kiritsugu. But it was still good of course, but i feel like you want more from the ending, which kinda forces you to consider watching the terrible Fate/Stay Night.

Dis is so true. I actually felt like the guy who had the most reason to win was Kariya.

I don't know if it is really for everyone, the start can be pretty slow IMO, it spends a lot of time developping characters without any action, which can feel boring to some.

I think you know this, but this series takes a different path from the visual novel. I heard they are going to make a movie at the end of this series showing the final path, Heaven's Gate i think its called.

I feel like they are doing an amazing job with the terribly script they have. My friend told me a lil about the visual novel, and it seems so terrible. I kinda wish they just made a new Fate series with all new chars and spirits. That would have been sick, or even a Fate/Stay Night that isn't attached to any paths in the VN

I think its fine

If fate/zero was the only thing to exist in the series id see the ending as being concluded, the only thing left open is what they do next which isnt part of a conclusion but rather the start of a new story really

Thats not a reason to not watch it, if someone doesnt watch it for that reason then they are being dumb I dont think anyone here just wants mindless action

It doesnt take a different path from the VN, the VN has 3 paths, the fate path, the unlimited blade works path and the heavens feel path The 2006 series takes the fate path where you basically learn nothing (in the game its the first play through you do) The 2010 movie takes the unlimited bladeworks path which reveals a good amount The 2014 series seems to be combining a few elements of heavens feel into the unlimited blade path, probably to make it tie into the movie that could come out The heavens feel path reveals everything (in the game its the final play through you get after unlocking everything in the other 2 paths)

You can see them talking in the background of a couple scenes, you cant hear what they are saying but they are def having meetings so shes not just a normal highschool girl It seems like the first time you noticed gilgamesh was much later than he actually appeared because hes in the first 2 eps in the background, a lot of the time with sakura

The fate path is the only path that is terrible which is the one most people will play as unlocking the other paths takes a few play throughs, the heavens feel path is the one that people say is the best (but takes a huge amount of effort to unlock), and the unlimited blade works path is pretty good And i think that matches up pretty well with the adaptations, 2006 series of the fate path is bad, the movie has a good story, just would be better as a show to resolve the pacing issues, the 2014 show should resolve that, and if theres a movie after this show based on the final path it should be great
You're not going to like it though because you spoiled yourself on a main part of the story Super spoilers that only people that saw the 2006 series and the 2010 movie, or bacon would know, dont read this if youve only seen fate/zero and the current airing series unless you also significantly spoiled yourself
Spoiler:
In the 2014 series, bacon, you said you didnt like how archer is
SUPER SPOILER:
shirou
I dont know how much you know about it but i actually really like it, you might come around to it once you know more, but since you know ahead of time i think you will just end up being disappointed
SUPER SPOILER CONTINUED:
When i said i thought beserker in fate/zero was from the future, it was mainly for 2 reasons, 1 he just seemed more futuristic than the others, though that was before i saw saber using a motorcycle like that which also seemed futuristic, the other reason is due to archer from fate/stay night, when they revealed he was shirou i was like "oh yeah, that actually works, if the grail can pull servants through time and space theres no reason it cant pull spirits from the future"
So beserker being from the future made sense to me (though i shouldve known he wasnt since the future thing is a big reveal in stay night and zero wouldnt reveal it then), what they ended up doing in fate/zero was better than beserker being from the future though since it played into sabers past, but the idea of having spirits from the future is good when it can work like how it does with shirou

F/SN 2014 Episode 6:
Despite a pretty slow start, i liked this episode, because of the ending. I'm excited for the next episode. I was jsut wondering, how did shinji become head mage of the matous, i don't remember seeing him in Fate/Zero,i also thought that creepy old matou dude from Fate/zero would be involved, but i imagine it will all be explained. So i believe we have seen all the classes and teams have been formed. Team 1 Shinji/Saber and Rin/Archer, Team 2 ?/Assassin and ?/Caster and then theres the solo folks Elia/Berserker, Shinji/Rider? and ?/Lancer. I think sketchy teacher guy is master of rider or assassin and kirei might be lancers master.

F/Z and UBW ep 6:
Bacon wrote:

I think its mentioned that he is sent away at the start of fate/zero, but we never actually saw him (like rin was but rin actually did something in fate/zero where as shinji didnt) Also the eldest son is the next family head and gets to be the matou master so of course it would be shinji (i think it was mentioned in F/Z and shinji said it here in ep 6, maybe ep 5)
In fate/zero with Kariya and his brother (i cant remember his name, but hes shinji's father), Kariya was the younger son but way more talented as a mage and neither of them wanted to be in the holy grail war The whole reason sakura was adopted and tortured like that by creepy old matou was to force Kariya into participating as the matou master in the holy grail war (he couldnt do it to shinji to force Kariya's brother to participate because shinji is a matou and his brother sucks as a mage anyway so Kariya was better choice)
So that was a special case there, normally its just eldest son

Actually i think i vaguely remember something about Kiritsugu shooting some Matou's guy's leg while interogating, because he thought the Matous kidnapped Irisveil. But i guess it couldnt have been him as he has both his legs

I think its cool that they are mixing it up considering this is Fate/Original recepie. Ida thought they woulda kept everything about the grail wars Vanilla for the first story. Also it prevents us from seeing a potentially under developped master.

Good episode, but it feels kinda obvious that the offscreen guy was that suspicious teacher who is probably casters master. In fact a real twist would be that its not him and someone like Gilgamesh or Kirei. Its also a little bitter sweet that rider got insta murdered. It makes kinda of a cool build up for caster or whoever murdered her, but it is also kinda annoying that she died without being revealed or anything, which leads me to my theory that she is not dead.

I didn't watch this episode right away because lately the show was a little uninteresting. The only char that intrigued me was archer. But even though this episode was only talking, i liked it. I had forgotten about sakura's having a sister and Shirou seemed a lil less uninterested in the whole war in this episode (So far he seemed super detached from the whole thing it was kind of annoying). I suppose shinji will be getting blond hair as a new servant. This kind of ruins my theory of Kirei being lancer's master, because if he was he wouldn't want shinji to return into the war. So i actually have no idea who lancer's master is, in fact we haven't seen that guy in a while. Also my theory about rider being alive doesnt work out i suppose. Anyways i liked the episode. The only thing that annoys me, still, is that saber doesn't seem to remember the events of fate/zero. It would add a pretty interesting dynamic if she did, its just too bad.

UBW Ep 10 (and some 8-9)
Spoiler:
So i knew from the orginal that shady teacher was casters master, but in the original i didnt think it was him like you did here, i think they did a better job of setting it up here, it seemed to be obvious to me but since i already knew i dont know if it actually was obvious or not In the original it came out of no where, so even if it was obvious here, id take that over seeing him once in ep 1 then he missing for 14 eps, then suddenly ep 15 hes a super powered master out of no where
Saber definitely remembers everything, when they go to the church in an earlier ep she doesnt go in with them because she knows kirei is there, and she seems to recognize Ilya in another earlier ep I think she just doesnt want them to know yet and you have to remember, she doesnt know why Kiri ordered her to destroy the grail at the end of Zero, from her perspective they won then Kiri basically took it away from her, so i think shes trying to figure out what happened by getting info about Kiri from them but doesnt want them to know for w/e reason
Also, Riders outfit is 1 of the ecchi outfits that i was talking about And if you want to know more about Rider
Spoiler:
Yeah, shes def dead, so heres some more info from the other series
She's Medusa, if she takes off the blindfold people are unable to move while looking at her eyes (she cant turn it off, hence why she needs the blindfold) Her eyes are pink, shes self conscious about her height, she doesnt like using the eye thing and wont unless its the only option She has multiple noble phantasms, the invisible dagger on a chain that you saw, the eye thing, riding equipment (its like a whip and reins) that has the power to make any phantasmal/divine beast rideable, and a pegasus that she can summon and rides on to charge with at insane speeds

UBW ep 10:
Caster's master didnt have many other candidates besides that teacher or , shinji's sister (i forget her name atm). In a show like this i guess you can't really show many people who aren't masters. OMG what if that comci relief teacher at shirou's house is lancer's master! (obviously not, i still stand by the idea that it's kirei). Rider seemed like a somewhat interesting character, not too cocky and not particularly evil (from the 2 scenes you see her in), and from what you have written, makes me kinda wish we saw a noble phantasm or something. Something that i didn't really like from episode 10 was that casters master could hold off saber? At least they gave an excuse, saying she was unprepared or something, but still. Isn't saber class suppose to be one of the strongest hand to hand clases? And even kiritsugu was panicking at the idea of fighting assassin (the weakest class) and kiritsugu was OP in fate/zero. Was pretty cool when shirou summoned the dual blades, wink wink. Anyways was a good episode

UBW ep 12:
Recently i haven't been so eager to catch up on UBW, because honestly nto much was happening, but this episode was pretty damn awesome. I really hated the way Shirou acted and command sealed saber and all that stuff, but when i think about it, it makes sens around his character, he is still naive. He is like Kiritsugu before he became cold. I actually, i don't really know why, got a ton a new respect for archer. He felt like an annoying asshole, but you see he is good and really powerful, maybe more so than saber. When he jumps in to save the day i got goosebumps. So gilgamesh's plan is to get the grail straight away also or to get revenge on eliasveil, still not all clear on that. Kirei seems weak vs caster, maybe on purpose? Also i called it! He is lancer's master. Excited about the good stuff comming up! April 2015
I actually didnt notice because i was so entranced in the episode and because it was so good, but it was a 2 part episode.
UBW post credit sneak peak:
Saber in a wedding dress for Gilgamesh i assume. I suppose there will be a deal between caster and kirei maybe? Gilgamesh saying "let us reenact the battle of our myth" is probably directed at saber also, unless berserker is somehow related to the epic of gilgamesh. Looks like Eliasveil prob going to die early. Archers identity reveal prob going to be sick.

Ep12
Spoiler:
Archer in the original rarely did anything (he has 1 badass moment in the original), which i hated since he seemed to be the most powerful of the servants, it was better during the movie but he still rarely helped Here its similar, though he actually comes in to save the day (most of the time) and does participate in most of the fights
Kirei vs Caster never happened in the original, in fact Caster never officially got command seals either (though she did force saber to work for her) It actually makes me wonder how she doesnt have command seals for Assassin already, she didnt have them in the original either but i never questioned it until now, i just assumed servants cant have command seals I guess rule breaker can break the rules and normally servants cant have them but rule breaker broke that rule so thats how she can have them now If thats the case, rule breaker is far more powerful here than it was in the original
I have no idea what gilgamesh is planning, he didnt really have a plan in the original Well he did have 1, which you can sorta see in the post credits, but i really hope that isnt his only plan here, he seems to be planning something else
Sabers dress in the post credits is the other ecchi outfit that i mentioned, it seems less ecchi here, but if they do a certain scene youll see what i mean
