well there's two reasons

Notch has made a ridiculous amount of money of minecraft and has spent jackshit of it on servers / adding more members to his team so i don't feel like I owe him a few extra dollars in his pocket

My feelings towards piracy apply to this game just as much as any other. if you cant afford it but want to play it, that shouldnt stop you. if you can afford it but not sure want to buy it thats almost the same thing. if you truly enjoyed it and then later at some point you can afford then buy it then... or in this case where its almost entirely 1 person profiting, don't bother.
