Summary WIXOSS is a card game that's popular with teenagers. Supposedly there exist "LRIG Cards," female character cards with wills of their own. Special girls can hear the voices of the LRIGs, and those who possess them are called Selectors. These Selectors have card battles in a dimension that other humans cannot access. It's said that whoever triumphs in these battles will have their wish granted. Ruko Kominato is the latest girl to find an LRIG card. Thoughts The best way to describe this anime is like a card game flavored madoka, and its really good The card game aspect rarely matters as they dont focus on the rules of the game or even really on the card battles, they dont even explain the rules of the game, but from what ive seen its similar to real MTG rules, it has colors like MTG and the colors have the same kind of abilities as MTG colors (like blue can force your enemy to discard cards for example in both the show and MTG) so i just think of it as some variation of MTG, normally not explaining the rules of the main thing that the characters do would bother me but it isnt really needed here, even if i didnt understand MTG/card games i wouldnt complain
The first couple of episodes are kind of meh and feel a bit rushed (although i was expecting it to explain and focus on the card game, if i didnt expect that id probably feel they were better than i felt they were), the first 3 or 4, but after those it gets much better After those first couple of episodes the show is on par with madoka, i was going to say madoka is better, but ep 8 (the most recent episode out at the time of writing this) dropped something amazing and its upgraded the show to be about equal with madoka, as long as they dont screw it up
This is a must watch for you seren, i dont want to say anything specific, but just trust me, watch it For everyone else, if you liked madoka (number 10 on my top 10 anime list from awhile back) youll probably like this It will have 12 episodes (8 are currently out) and a second season is already planned, as long as it continues the way it has been going it should be great

At the start of the anime i saw LRIG and was like "Thats GIRL backwards" and didnt think much of it other than that all LRIGS would be female and since WIXOSS was there i figured the creator just likes using english letters as names for stuff even if it doesnt make sense
So even though i knew it was girl backwards it never occurred to me that the lrigs were eternal girls, i knew getting their wish wouldnt work out for them, but since losing caused the opposite of your wish to happen i figured getting your wish would follow the same logic and that it would be not exactly what you wanted (like the monkeys paw, you wish for money and your parents die and you get the money you wished for from their life insurance for example), rather than some actual price
I like this more than what i was thinking as it ended up being less predictable to me and explains why the LRIGs didnt tell the girls everything up front Even though its basically like soul gems from madoka And it also seems like the wish isnt exactly what they want too, just in a different way

The intro makes it look interesting, but it seems kinda stupid that the show focuses around a card game that inst properly explained. I don't see how you could get invested in it if you don't understand the rules o.0. Maybe ill give it a watch if you say it continues being good AS U HAVNT FAILED ME IN THE PAST PAT!
Yeah, i said "even if i didnt understand MTG/card games i wouldnt complain" but i dont know that for sure since i already have that understanding And knowing what the different deck colors do in mtg does give you insight into some things
I guess i can give a basic overview of MTG without spoiling anything White has a lot of buffs and heals (think of priest or pally from hearthstone since youve played that) Red has a lot of direct damage and is used a lot for aggro (think of mage or warlock from hearthstone) Green has big creatures (minions) and very specific buffs that work with those creatures as well as the ability to ramp up (think of druid, and the beast synergy in hunter) Black debuffs and destroys creatures (kindve like rogue, though rogue is more red/black than pure black) Blue negates damage and alters his own and/or the opponents hand as well as having various other utility tricks (hearthstone doesnt have anything equivalent to blue, a deck that forces your opponent to draw too many cards is the closest you can get to blue in hearthstone, but its not really the same)
In the show there are no creatures, those general abilities are used through the LRIG, so it may as well be a magical girl anime, where the magical girls are the LRIGs and the LRIGs follow the commands of the normal girl (the selector) Or like pokemon where the LRIG is a pokemon with moves of a certain type and the selector is the trainer that orders them to attack
So you dont really need to know the specific rules of the card game
This ended a while ago and i recommend not watching it until season 2 begins Its really annoying, they left it on a cliff hanger, like they shouldve just made a 24 episode season rather than 2 12 episode seasons like this
But it is still good, just better to watch all at once Season 2 should be out in the winter

I hated this new OP at first, i still dont like it, but its not as bad as i initially thought I like the transitions between scenes but dislike the song and general style, the first OP is way better

Its really weird to have sound effects in the OP, its somewhat unsettling Makes me want to see other openings with sound effects
Theres a part in ep 1 that is hilarious, i considered it as a silly possibility at the end of season 1, but didnt think theyd actually roll with it as the real explanation

i keep waiting to watch this show until i hear if it bombed or ended up great. i guess having a 2nd season is a good sign. there's nothing (nothing) airing for winter 2014 so i might pick this up soon

Iona's wish was basically "I wish to be an LRIG on the condition that im Ru's LRIG" which is the dumbest most wasteful wish i can think of in a system where you become an LRIG no matter what as the price for having your wish granted

I actually didnt think this fit together until i realized that Kuro must have fulfilled Iona's (the original Iona) wish to become a model, hence why Kuro was a model at the start of the series It felt weird to me for Kuro to be the way she was earlier in the series until i realized that, then i felt dumb for not realizing it right away
Im still not satisfied with the explanation though, mainly because of Mayu, how/why did her imagination effect reality It seemed like she was a normal girl that was sick with something that basically made her bed ridden, and that she died from that disease at the end of Kuros exposition Other than the LRIGS and selector games this world has been shown to be normal, so it doesnt explain how a normal girls imaginary LRIGS and selector games became real So there must be something else going on here, the selector games and LRIGs are a result of w/e it is that gave Mayu the power to make what she imagined real
Earlier in the show it was said that Ru's mom is afraid of her, im thinking Ru is like Mayu, in that she can make imagination into reality Ru did it as a kid without realizing it and freaked out her mom to the point of having her live with her grandma Ive been trying to come up with a theory on why her mom would be scared of her, and nothing worked until now Ulith might also be able to do it too, but im not sure yet
Also in the Mayu flashback you can see the maid with a tray standing there, it seems like shes in horror or shock even though we cant see her face from just the way she stands like that and the fact that we cant see her face, pretty sure she was able to see Mayu playing with Tama and Kuro then and was scared out of her mind Since they implied that the maid is scared of Mayu in that scene it made me remember Ru's mom (i think the flashback with her mom was a similar kind of thing where we couldnt see her moms face but it was implied she was afraid)
I also have a larger theory (and by larger i mean crazy, even crazier than my fuko sheep theory from clannad) about Ru's grandma, though theres key things missing so its not complete Heres what i got so far This all requires the above theory to be true
Ru's grandma has the same ability to make imagination reality Shes not scared by Ru like her mom was so if we go with the theory that Ru scared her mom by making something from her imagination real its reasonable to think that her grandma would see her do that too once she moved there, since it didnt freak her out she must understand it and the best way to understand it is if she can do it too It also explains how Ru can do it, like its passed down (every other generation) in the family or something (though it doesnt explain how they do it in the first place, but thats impossible to theorize about right now)
This is the only part that i feel confident enough to say so far, theres a lot more to it involving what grandma did with her power since shes aware of how it works, but ill wait for more info before saying it It requires a series of conclusion jumping that i cant really back up yet and currently has many holes
